Description

This course will explore the motivation and methods of social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurs create ventures or initiatives that strive to advance social change through innovative solutions. The issues they address include such things as poverty, global warming,HIV/AIDS, clean drinking water, refugee resettlement, malnutrition,bullying, mental health, etc. In this course, we will examine ways that successful social entrepreneurs achieve long-term, sustainable impact using business strategies and market principles to help achieve social goals. We will examine crowdfunding and microfinancing as innovative ways to allocate resources to people who can leverage them for positive impact. Additionally, we will use some concepts of creative problem solving and design thinking to identify new approaches to social problems. The course will involve readings, discussions, and global chat sessions with students interested in social innovation. It will conclude with a final project in which students will create business models for new social ventures. This course will be highly interactive and will require a great deal of participation. It is designed to fuel your motivation to tackle challenges in the world around you and to provide you with insights and tools to help you succeed.
