Digital Transformation in Vocational Education and the Role of School Management

Duration: 2019 - 2021

Hardly any other topic currently moves the education system as strongly as the digital transformation. For many schools, this change represents a challenge with various unknowns: Infrastructure and support, skills and resources of teachers and administration, and especially future technological developments characterize areas for which only limited reliable statements can be made so far. However, experts and literature agree on one thing: the digital change cannot be delegated to the teaching staff, but must be systematically controlled, accompanied, evaluated and developed by the school management as part of a change process.

In cooperation with Dr. Serge Imboden (HES-SO Valais, Switzerland), the project, funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SBFI), will for the first time systematically evaluate the status of the digital transformation in vocational schools in Switzerland. In order to identify the various dimensions of change at school and teaching level as well as the respective stage of transformation at the individual school in dynamic terms, expert interviews and a broad-based quantitative survey will be used. Based on the results, adaptive support systems will then be developed for schools to cope with the digital change.

The first published results are expected in 2020.
