Taught by:

Aim and outline of the course:

International migration flows have been growing over the last decades and are a crucial aspect
of globalization. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that the number
of international migrants is 281 million in 2020, making up 3.6 percent of the world population.
In recent years this topic has also found a lot of attention from economists studying the causes
and consequences of migration in the receiving and sending countries.

This course offers an introduction to the economics of migration, covering the following topics:

1. Migration Decision and Forms of Migration
2. Migration and Climate Change
3. Immigration and Labor Markets
4. Effects of Migration on Attitudes and Political Economy
5. Integration and Integration Policies
6. Migration and Education
7. Refugee Migration
8. Development impacts of migration

9. Data Science for Migration and Mobility

At the end of the course, students are familiar with the basic theoretical and empirical concepts
in the economics of migration. We will especially focus on understanding the identification of
causal effects and the connection between the different areas of analysis.

The course will consist of frontal teaching of the essential theoretical and empirical tools and
reading key scientific articles related to the outlined topics (a reading list will be provided at
the beginning of the semester). During the Tutorial students will give a presentation about a
chosen topic/research paper with a followed discussion
