Diese Veranstaltung ist Teil der Veranstaltungsreihe „Open Science Meet-Ups“.

On October 24th, between 14.00 and 14.45 (CET), the next Open Science Meet-Up will take place on Zoom.

This meet-up takes place in the context of this year’s international open access week, which revisits last year’s theme Community over Commercialization. It does so to raise awareness for approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community.

While open access has developed into a new business model for academic publishers, academic institutions and scholars seek to strengthen non-commercial alternatives, such as scholar-led initiatives. This ties in with their endeavours to manage the rising costs of academic publishing as well as the intent to pursue bibliodiversity and equity within academic publishing. Such alternative models that enable open access without publication charges are often referred to as diamond open access. Besides being free of charges, diamond open access usually entails allowing scholars and/or academic institutions to maintain control and ownership over their publications.

At the same time, diamond open access journals and publishers face a range of challenges: how to cover the expenses behind publishing to the end of financial sustainability? How to attain to quality standards with scarce resources? (see a.o. Bosman et al. 2021). Still, for the above-mentioned reasons, many academic institutions deem the pursuit of diamond open access worthwhile, discussing how they can support it to the best of their abilities.

In this meet-up session, Martina Benz, (open access officer at the University of Konstanz/ project coordinator at open-access.network) will give an overview on recent discussions and developments, especially regarding Diamond Open Access in Germany, and outline some ideas about what academic institutions can do to support Diamond Open Access. We are eager to hear your standpoints on and experiences with diamond open access. Everyone is welcome to join the session, no registration required.
