Measuring Civic-Economic Competencies within the Zürcher Leading House „Lehr-Lernprozesse im kaufmännischen Bereich“ (LINCA)

LINCA is an abbreviation for ‘Learning and INstruction for Commercial Apprentices’. It is a Leading House research programme supported by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation of Switzerland(SERI).
The Leading House LINCA aims at generating more profound knowledge about commercial vocational education and training. Therewith the governance of education will be provided with information guiding political and practical directions.
About 19% of the Swiss Federal VET Diplomas granted derive from commercial education and training programs (Swiss Federal Statistical Office, 2011).
Approximately 11,000 teenagers start vocational education and training in the commercial sector each year. Therefore, it is of great importance to the Swiss economy that the commercial education and training successfully prepares the future businessmen and -women (clerks) for the professional environment. However, only limited empirical data are available regarding the effectiveness of commercial vocational training colleges in Switzerland. The Leading House ‘Learning and Instruction for Commercial Apprentices
(LINCA)’ project aims to fill this gap. In order to understand the effectiveness of teaching and learning in vocational education and training, the Leading House LINCA investigates the following essential aspects and issues of teaching and learning processes in the commercial sector:
1. Competence development of apprentices in the process of their education;
2. Quality of instruction and courses;
3. Professionalism of teachers.
